• Schoolhouse 2 has finally come out of beta after months of testing. It’s a huge improvement over the version 1 and is by far the most refined homework app for OS X out there. The design and features beat the competition in every way. 2/27/07 (0)
  • Edit video online with jumpcut

    jumpcut

For those who don’t have a video editing program or need to edit video in a flash, jumpcut is a really spectacular website. Using Flash, it allows you to upload video clips (up to 50 MB a clip) and edit them online. With its editing features, video can be cloned and other clips can be added to the cloned video. Sound files can be added to either overwrite existing audio or mix in with it. They also allow a number of transition effects. It is completely free and very cool.

Using Gizmo Call to make phone calls from your browser

February 4th, 2007 at 7:17AM EST or 1 year, 6 months ago (the early morning)
    Gizmo Call

We’ve all heard of Skype, the internet telephone software that allows you to make calls to landlines (now no longer free, however). It’s great, but in order to use it, you need to install some software. Gizmo Call improves on this by allowing you to make free VOIP calls from your PC using nothing more than your browser and a microphone. You only need to install a small Flash plugin and you’re allowed five minutes of calling per day unless you register, which bumps you up to 10 minutes. There’s the option of purchasing more minutes after that.

Also, sorry if that’s your phone number. I just typed in a random number that probably doesn’t exist.

  • You can reopen the last closed tab in Firefox with Cmd-Shift-T (Ctrl-Shift-T for Windows users). Cmd+L (Ctrl+L) to go the the address bar is useful too. 2/1/07 (0)
  • The URL Fixer Firefox extension automatically corrects common URL typos in the address bar, instantly correcting cmo to com, or htp to http, etc. This is great for fast typers. 1/27/07 (0)
  • Firefox 2.0 has been officially released. It has been on the FTP servers already, but just now has the website been updated to reflect the update. The best changes have to be the new improved tabbed browsing and built-in spell checking. 10/24/06 (0)

  • Bug in VisualHub for free activation

June 11th, 2006 at 5:21PM EDT or 2 years, 2 months ago (the late afternoon)

VisualHub is new piece of software made by the guys who made iSquint. It’s an easy-to-use and very fast video convertor for nearly every format. I’d say it’s probably worth the $23.32 USD, but there’s a pretty big bug in it. You don’t need to pay for it to get a working serial. Just keep the name and e-mail box blank and enter in any number for the serial.

Bug in VisualHub for free activation

Don’t worry, already notified the guys about this. ;)

Update: They’ve pulled the bugged version and re-released a fixed version. I guess anyone who grabbed a copy in the first 24 hours got lucky. :P

The end of Times New Roman?

    May 27th, 2006 at 4:34PM EDT or 2 years, 2 months ago (mid-afternoon)

Other than a new interface revealed in the recently released Office 2007 beta, it seems there is also a new default font. It’s called Calibri; it’s a san-sarif font, versus Times New Roman, a serif font.

    Temperature Monitor for OSX

May 27th, 2006 at 1:26PM EDT or 2 years, 2 months ago (around lunchtime)

I found a great application for Tiger (OS 10.4). It’s called Temperature Monitor and it displays the temperature of each sensor on your Mac (CPU, hard disk, memory, graphics card, etc.). Temperature Monitor has an option to run right from the menu bar, so it doesn’t take up much screen real estate. It’s free as well. :)

    Inquisitor Online

    RV2 on Inquisitor Online

Inquisitor is very cool instant search plugin for Safari (I’m using it for Safari) and Camino, but I found there is a pretty nifty AJAX online version they have as well (for free). :)

    Windows Media Player 11 leaked

May 13th, 2006 at 11:27PM EDT or 2 years, 3 months ago (late at night)

Windows Media Player 11 has been leaked on Softpedia. days before a public preview beta (official release scheduled sometime in June 2006) from Microsoft. The Softpedia servers are at the moment getting hammered from all the downloads, so I’ve mirrored the .exe into a zip file here.

Features in Windows Media Player 11:
    -New UI
-Support for better synchronization for portable devices
    -Album “stacks” of album art
    -Indexed libraries with search-as-you-type features
-User controlled downgrade of quality for DRM content to allow for smaller files
-DRM content will contain metadata that shows what the user is allowed to do with the file
-Includes Microsoft and MTV’s Urge music store

And oh yes, in typical RV2 [blog] fashion, I discovered a Windows Genuine Advantage workaround (for those illegal copies of Windows) since it does do a check prior to installation (you’ll need WinRAR for this- it’s free):

    1) Extract “wmp11.zip” and you should get a folder called “wmp11.zip” with a file named “Microsoft Windows Media Player 11.exe” inside.
    2) Right click “Microsoft Windows Media Player 11.exe” and select “Extract to Microsoft Windows Media Player 11\”. Double-click the newly made folder named “Microsoft Windows Media Player 11″.
    3) Double-click the file named “wmfdist11.exe” to install the Windows Media Player 11 codec.
    4) Double-click the file named “wmp11.exe” to install Windows Media Player 11!

With that said, the best choice, for playing media files is still VLC or iTunes.
