Get Comcast to lower fees or upgrade your service for FREE!

Comcast, like any other business, never wants to lose its customers. If you try to cancel or downgrade your account, they’ll transfer you to their retention department. The retention department is made up of a group of employees who are paid to retain the customer at all costs. They’re even willing to lower the price of your service or upgrade your account for free, if necessary.
This morning, I called 1-800-COMCAST and pressed “4,” the option terminate/downgrade my current plan. I threatened that I would cancel and switch to Verizon FiOS unless they were willing to offer a better deal than the current $44.95/month 15MB/2MB plan from Verizon FiOS. Without hesitation, the lady offered to upgrade my plan to 16MB/1MB to slightly match Verizon without any additional cost.

Your mileage may vary depending on who you talk to, but just keep trying and you’ll get some kind of discount. If the customer service representative actually attempts to cancel the account, just hang up and call again later. I was able to save around $10 a month by getting a free upgrade, but if you don’t need the extra bandwidth, you can get them to lower the fees of your current plan instead.
Update: Over at MWYN, Mike was able to get his prices lowered to $34.99 for a whole year. Proof that this works.
Post success stories in the comments! If anyone is able to get a plan upgrade and lowered fees, definitely let everyone know how you did it.

[…] This whole process only took about 10-15 Min. However, I would except he just got lucky and his hold time was minimized. I hope this method seems pretty easy, and it is, if you get a nice operator. You have to sell them that you are going to switch and hope they are in a good mood. You can’t, however, let them cancel your service. If they say they are going to cancel, hang up and call again. Don’t be afraid call multiple times until you get someone nice. The process on how to do this is simple and follows: Call Comcast at 1-800-comcast Enter your phone number and then press 1 for English. Press 4 for downgrades and canceling. Wait for an operator. Tell them fios is offering a much better deal for the same price and ask if there is anything they can do for you. Hint at lowering the price or upgrading your plan. If they claim they can’t do anything for you, Hang up and call again. Eventually you’ll get someone good. I tried the same procedure and was able to get them to lower my price to $34.99 a month for year. That’s over a $15 savings over what I was paying. It, however, took an hour of being on hold and calling back for a nicer person. Ryan was able to get his plan upgraded and I was able to save some money. I haven’t tried to get both but if anyone is able to get both tell me about it. I’m very interested about your results. I would like to mention that with-out ryan telling me about this I wouldn’t have been able to bring you this information, so here’s to Ryan. Also, Ryan has posted his findings on his personl blog here. TV Coming soon […]
